Billy Levert “Mac” McGee, 92, of Austin, Texas, passed away on September 27, 2026. Born March 31, 1934, in Lamar County, Alabama, Billy was the son of Pleas Andrew McGee and Emma Smith McGee. From his earliest days, he carried forward a steady sense of purpose and a grounded devotion to the people and places he called home.
Mac built a life defined by faithful work and quiet dependability. He served as a Supervisor at the University of Texas Power Plant, a role that reflected his practical skill and consistent leadership. Upon his retirement in 1995, he left behind a legacy of responsibility and commitment – one earned through years of showing up, doing the job well, and doing it with integrity.
At the heart of Mac’s life was his enduring love for his high school sweetheart, Katherine Sheffield. Together, they shared almost 50 years of marriage, a partnership marked by loyalty, perseverance, and the kind of steady care that grows deeper with time. This union produced 2 children, Jimmy and Kathy.
Mac’s joy for life was often found on the open road and under white skies. He loved traveling, especially spending time in Colorado, and each summer for two weeks the whole family would pack up for summer vacations – traditions that became lasting memories. Mac and Katherine traveled to Alaska in his green 1969 Ford pickup, a journey that spoke to his determination and spirit of adventure. Later, he purchased a motor home and continued to travel passionately, always ready for the next mile and the next story.
A true fan of engines and competition, Mac loved going to NASCAR races, drag races, car shows, and the Indy 500 with his son-in-law, George, friends, and five grandsons. He also took great pride in showing up for his grandsons’ sporting activities, offering the kind of steadfast support that is felt long after the game ends. He enjoyed being outdoors, tinkering with cars, and settling in for western movies – simple pleasures that suited him well. Where he went, Mac had a gift for connection, and he made friends everywhere he went.
Mac is survived by his daughter Kathy and husband, George Toth; grandsons, William McGee, Carl McGee, Michael Toth and his wife Debbi, James “JP” Toth and his wife Jessica, Stephen Toth and his wife Taylor; 8 great-grandchildren, Baily, Bobbi, Alyssa, and Julia McGee, Airen Toth, Brinnley O’Neal, Bear Toth, and Reus Toth; his half-brother, Pleas A. McGee, Jr.; along with many nieces and nephews and many, many friends he considered family.
Mac’s warmth and outlook were captured in the words he loved to say: “Welcome to the World.” It was more than a phrase – it was a way of greeting life and the people in it, with openness, steadiness, and a sincere sense of presence.
