Herbert C. Achtmeyer Jr.

Herb was a master of quirkiness and surprises up until the day he died. His greatest joy was riding his razor scooter daily. It was a common sight to see Herb zooming around the neighborhood pushing off with perfect balance and steering, one time even racing on his scooter to stop a toddler from running into the street, much to the relief of her mother.

Herb loved to sing and would belt out a tune for anyone who asked, whether in his beloved karaoke group or his doctor’s office. When he lost his vision last year and could no longer read the words on the prompt, he sang the one song that he could remember; “You’ll Never Walk Alone" and that became his anthem and his guide.

Herb believed there was nothing that could not be solved with a good bowl of ice cream. Always vanilla. With an occasional banana split.

Herb was born in1932 to Doris and Herbert Achtmeyer and raised in Stratford, Connecticut. He loved the outdoors and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Brown University, was on the varsity swim team and graduated in 1954, with honors and a degree in history. He then joined the army achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant. In 1958 he married Dorothy and together they raised 3 children. He was a tireless and dedicated worker throughout his career as an Employee Benefits Consultant at Johnson and Higgins in New York and Miami, and later with Century Financial Services in West Palm Beach, FL where he finished his career and retired.

Throughout his life, he was involved in the Christian church, teaching Sunday school and participating in community service. Herb lived out his faith quietly, but fully, through his love for others, generosity, gratitude, laughter and joy.

Herb is survived by his daughters Carol (Carolyn) and Susan, and his beloved grandchildren Stephane, Christian (Cynthia), Joel and Jamie. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy, his son Paul and his sister Ellen.

Herb’s celebration of life will be on Sunday October 11, 2026, at 2 pm at Cook-Walden Funeral Home 14501 North IH-35, Pflugerville, Texas.

The family would like to thank Dr. Imsais, Angela and the nurses at St. David’s Medical Center, Kindful Hospice, and the caregivers from Marleney’s Services, particularly Lisa who made our world a better place.

Herb was a loving person, proud grandfather/father and loyal friend. We will miss him greatly, but we are grateful for the lessons he shared that a joyful life can be found in a scooter ride, a good song and a bowl of ice cream.
