David, or Dave as he was referred to by those who knew him best, was born September 23,1942 in Fort Worth, Texas to J. D. and Beverly Buckman. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his only sister, Phyllis Nelson.
David was a 1960 graduate of Fort Worth Polytechnic High School. He loved sports and was a member of the football, baseball and track teams at Poly. After high school graduation, he enrolled at Texas Wesley College (now University) where he became student body president and made many lifelong friends. He graduated three years later with a B.S. in Medicine. While attending TWC, David met the love of his life, Jane Blair. They never dated anyone else after they met and were married in 1964. This marked the beginning of a 62-year marriage rooted in a strong commitment to family.
David later attended the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and with Jane’s loving support received his M. D. in 1967. In 1966, the family grew with the birth of their first daughter Tami. Not long after that, the family of three moved to Spokane, WA for David’s internship at Sacred Heart Hospital. After internship, the Buckman family returned to UTMB in Galveston for a 3-year OB/Gyn residency. During that time, the family grew again as they welcomed their only son Brett. Upon completion of his residency, David moved his family to Fort Campbell, KY where he served 2 years as a major and OB/Gyn physician in the U.S. Army. In Fort Campbell, the nuclear Buckman family became complete with the birth of their last child Wendi. In 1973, the family relocated to Austin, TX where David joined DesRosiers, Wernecke and Associates and practiced OB/Gyn medicine for 27 years. When he retired in 2000, David had delivered more than 6000 babies! He was well-loved by his patients and co-workers.
David loved Jesus, his family and friends, his work and all sports in that order. He spent countless hours coaching youth soccer and baseball and attending his children’s sporting events. He always found time to take an extended summer vacation with family to Colorado – another of his loves. Hiking, fishing, having family cookouts and just soaking up the mountain air became a family tradition that has been passed down. He was an avid fan of the TCU Horned Frogs, the UT Longhorns, and the Dallas Cowboys. His competitive spirit drove him toward excellence in all things which is also part of his legacy. Through every phase of life, Dave’s quick wit and undying loyalty to those he loved drew people to him. He and Jane forged many strong friendships that have stood the test of time in each place along life’s way.
Dave is survived by his wife Jane, his daughter Tami Bryant and her husband Kreg, his son Dr. Brett Buckman and his wife Heather, and his daughter Wendi Rushing and her husband Darren. Also, a part of David’s legacy are his grandchildren in birth order, Tanner Bryant and his wife Brittany, Braden Buckman and his wife Emma, Kayli Bryant, Haden Buckman, and Caden Buckman. David also welcomed Brooks, his first great grandson, in June of 2025. He was thrilled that Brooks will carry on the Buckman name.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 23, 2026, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
