July 25, 1923 – October 8, 2026
Captain John R. Bonney, U.S. Navy (Ret.), passed away peacefully on October 8, 2026, at the age of 103, surrounded by his loving family, in his room at University Village in Round Rock, Texas.
Born July 25, 1923, in Forestburg, South Dakota, to Roger and Priscilla Bonney, John was the son of a Methodist minister. His remarkable journey began early when he learned to fly and joined the United States Navy at just 17 years old.
During World War II, John flew reconnaissance aircraft, beginning a distinguished military career that would span 43 years of active and reserve service. Throughout his aviation career, he also flew hurricane hunter aircraft and served as a flight instructor, sharing his knowledge and passion for flying with others. After more than four decades of dedicated service to his country, John retired with the rank of Captain in the United States Navy.
John valued education and continued learning throughout his life. He graduated from Northwestern University, Southern Methodist University, and the Naval War College. In civilian life, he enjoyed a successful career in banking.
But there was much more to John than his impressive accomplishments.
Blessed with a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor, John loved to laugh and share stories of his many adventures. He was intelligent, curious, and always seemed to have something to do. Whether tinkering around the house, working on a project, or simply keeping himself busy, John rarely sat still. His family often wondered if his constant activity was the secret to his remarkable longevity.
John and his beloved late wife, Sue, shared a love of traveling and dancing. Together, they explored the world, made lasting memories, and enjoyed a life filled with adventure. John was also an accomplished gourmet cook, a devoted friend, and a man whose wisdom and humor enriched the lives of those around him.
He loved his family in his own quiet way, offering guidance, wisdom, and a steady presence throughout the years. His stories, laughter, and wise counsel will be deeply missed.
John is survived by his son, Douglas Bonney, and daughter-in-law, Myra; his daughter, Barbara Bonney, and daughter-in-law, Jeri Goodman; his stepdaughters, Debbie and Pam; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sue.
After 103 extraordinary years, John leaves behind a legacy of service, adventure, laughter, love, and a lifetime of memories.
And while those who loved him will miss him dearly, there is comfort in imagining John and Sue reunited at last, dancing together once again.
Fair winds and following seas, Captain Bonney. Your watch is over. Rest easy, sailor.
