Michele was born on September 27, 1955, in Austin, Texas, to Lyle and Wynona Fallwell. A true Austinite at heart, Michele remained fiercely proud of her Texas roots. She graduated from The University of Texas, where she was selected as a member of the Longhorn and Varsity Singers. After receiving her degree, she fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming an English teacher and spent 25 years as an educator in Austin ISD. She continued to inspire young minds throughout retirement by substituting and volunteering as an elementary school mentor.
In 1977, Michele married the love of her life and fellow Longhorn, Dudley Hawthorne. Together they built a life centered on family, friendship, and unconditional love. Their children, Brian and Erin, were Michele's greatest pride and joy, and she treasured every moment spent with them.
Michele enjoyed reading, music, gardening in her beautiful backyard, shopping, and spending time with those she loved. She had a special place in her heart for animals and never passed up an opportunity to help a stray or spoil her own pets. Children and animals were naturally drawn to her gentle and caring spirit.
More than anything, Michele will be remembered for being a bright light who always put others before herself—even in her final days. Whether offering a helping hand, a listening ear, or quiet encouragement, she consistently placed the needs of family, friends, students, and even strangers above her own. She believed deeply in the “Golden Rule” to treat others as she wanted to be treated and instilled that value in those around her. She welcomed others without judgment and believed that every person deserved to be accepted and valued for exactly who they are.
Michele was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Wynona Fallwell.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Dudley Hawthorne; son, Brian Hawthorne and husband Nick; daughter, Erin Harris; brother, Michael Fallwell and wife Jennifer; beloved pups Dashel and Paisley who brought her endless joy; numerous loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
The family would like to thank the many friends, neighbors, caregivers, and loved ones who shared in Michele's life and provided support along the way.
At her request, there will be no formal funeral service. We ask that you honor her memory by wearing an accent of purple (her favorite color), holding up your horns when you hear The Eyes of Texas, giving your pet an extra treat, sharing a laugh with a friend, or extending a helping hand to someone in need—all things Michele did that made this world a little brighter.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Austin Pets Alive! or Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
