William Monroe Wehring Jr.

William Monroe “Bill” Wehring Jr. was born September 21, 1922, in Rotan, Texas. Raised by his grandparents with five uncles as older brothers and two aunts as older sisters, he learned quickly that everyone was expected to carry their weight. As the aunts and uncles married and started their families, it was young Monroe (as he was known by his grandparents) who was relied on to help support "Pa and Ma". Starting at age 8 he delivered circulars and magazines to earn what he could, and as he got older and stronger, he learned to drive a tractor. By age 10, he was plowing and making 50 cents a day. By age 15 Bill was working pipeline and running crews of men much older than himself. Hard work and determination were instilled in him from his upbringing and served him well throughout his adult life.

On October 4, 1942, Bill married the love of his life, Lola Young. Just two months later, in December 1942, he answered his country's call and joined the United States Army. Bill served with distinction in the Pacific during World War II, earning two Bronze Stars for meritorious service before receiving an honorable discharge on January 23, 1946. He returned home a decorated soldier and set about building the life that he and Lola had dreamed of together.

Construction was booming after the war, and with his knowledge of machinery Bill began working as a crane operator. He later became a crane owner and ultimately a business owner erecting steel in buildings and concrete bridges across Texas. When it was time to slow down, Bill was drawn back to his farming roots.

At what turned out to be the midpoint of his life, he and Lola moved to Hamilton, Texas and started hay farming and raising Santa Gertrudis cattle. He loved the land, the work, and the rhythm of days spent outdoors tending to what mattered. Those who knew him best would tell you he was defined by three things: honesty, hard work, and kindness. He didn't put on airs, he didn't cut corners, and he treated people right. It was that simple, and it was that rare.

In 1996 they decided it was time to slow down, or at least try, so they moved to Georgetown, Texas. As was meant to be, Bill was given access to a small hay patch and he continued fertilizing, cutting and baling hay until well into his 90's. When Lola's health diminished Bill, with help from Maria Alves, devoted himself entirely to her care. Following Lola's passing and with Maria's continued help Bill remained independent and as self-sufficient as possible until moving to Sedro Trail Assisted Living in May of 2025.

Bill passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, having lived a remarkably full life that spanned more than a century.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 76 years, Lola Wehring. He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Cantrell; his son, Billy Wehring; his grandson, Jason Wehring, wife Shannon, great grandson Jackson, great granddaughter Sarah; his granddaughter, Janna Wehring, partner Curtis and great grandson Zachary and numerous other family members and friends who loved him dearly.

Visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. with a service to follow at 3:00 p.m. on April 11, 2026, at Cook Walden Capital Parks in Pflugerville, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Jason Wehring, Curtis Wilson, Chance Leigh, Diogo Alves, Jackson Wehring, and Zachary Wilson.

It takes God's grace and the help of a lot of people to live 103 and a half years. The family would like to thank Maria Alves for her constant love and attention to Dad's needs over many years, the staff at Sedro Trail Assisted Living for making Dad's last year one of compassionate care filled with love, and finally his granddaughter Janna, who was always there to see that "Grandpa" knew he was loved and cherished.
