Born in San Juan to Abel and Alicia Cuellar, he was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and cherished son.
For 34 years, Esequiel dedicated his life to coaching basketball at Edinburg High School. He loved his profession and believed in the power of sports to shape young lives. He often told his children, “Find something you love to do, so you will never have to work a day in your life.” To his students and athletes, he was more than a coach; he was a mentor, a role model, and a guiding light whose lessons extended far beyond the basketball court.
His greatest love was his family. He shared a beautiful lifelong love story with his wife, Maria, the love of his life. Together, they raised three children who were his pride and joy. His two sons had the special experience of playing for their father during their high school years, while his daughter was his faithful companion and shadow. His grandchildren were the light of his eyes, bringing him endless happiness.
Esequiel cherished traveling, family reunions, holidays, and every opportunity to bring his loved ones together. Though he was not the family cook, he always enjoyed his son Eric’s famous ribs! Whether surrounded by family or spending time in his beloved school gym, he was happiest doing what he loved most.
He will be remembered for his discipline, dedication, caring smile, and the countless lives he touched throughout his 34 years of coaching. His legacy lives on through his family, friends, and generations of students who will forever carry his lessons in their hearts.
Rest peacefully, Coach Cuellar. Your greatest victories were not measured on a scoreboard, but in the lives you inspired, the family you cherished, and the love you leave behind. You will forever be loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten.
