Karl was born on August 14, 1961, in Alice, Texas, and was raised in Falfurrias, Texas, where he formed the roots of a life defined by the love of family, kindness, and service to others.
From his youth, Karl demonstrated a passionate interest in service. He devoted himself to being an altar server at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Falfurrias, reflecting early on his sense of responsibility and community, and later earned the distinction of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. These years also helped Karl develop himself as a naturalist, finding great joy in observing the beauty of the outdoors.
In 1983, Karl graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film. His post-graduation experiences in the Austin arts community honed his discerning eye and nourished his eclectic taste in music, film, and literature. After moving to Brownsville, Texas in 1988, he launched a remarkable career of 37 years as an educator, helping both elementary and middle school students excel academically. Over these years, he also sponsored extracurricular activities like Science Fair, Chess Club, spelling bees, and academic competitions in arts, writing, and geography. Karl loved his work deeply, took great pride in inspiring his students, and distinguished himself as a mentor for the next generation of Texas educators. Creating brighter futures for all students and advocating for public education were such sources of joy for Karl during all his years in the classroom.
To know Karl was to know his passion for storytelling and the art form of comic books. A lifelong devotee of the medium, Karl’s unique visual memory fueled his incredible capacity to acquire and share a vast body of knowledge about the art and artists, the writers and stories, and the vivid lore of the comic book industry. In 1990, he founded Unknown Worlds, Brownsville’s first comic shop, allowing him to share his passion with a new community of comic enthusiasts over its five years of operation. At the age of 61, after forging his career in education, Karl returned to his roots and opened Comics, Inc., a new comic shop at 10th Street Plaza in McAllen, letting him once again live his passions and share his extensive knowledge with a new generation of artists, writers, and fans.
He was preceded in death by his father, Octavio Garcia, and his beloved aunts, Lilia P. Cruz and Petra Perez.
Karl was a devoted son, brother, husband, and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan D. Garcia; his children, Ian David Kretz, Cedar Riley Garcia, and Erin Noelle Garcia; his mother, Jane P.
