Manuel Sloss, Jr. passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, dedication, and warmth that will be forever cherished by those who knew and loved him.
A lifelong Texan, Manuel was born and raised in San Juan, Texas. He graduated from PSJA High School and pursued higher education at Pan American College in Edinburg. In 1975, he and his family settled in Weslaco, where he would remain for the rest of his life, building a life rooted in family, service, and community.
Manuel devoted over 35 years to public service, beginning his career in Marfa, Texas with the U.S. Border Patrol. He later joined the Immigration & Naturalization Service, first serving as an Inspector at the Hidalgo Port of Entry. His commitment to the mission and community led to a long and respected career, culminating in his retirement in November 2003 as Area Port Director in Brownsville, Texas.
A true outdoorsman, Manuel found peace and joy in nature. He traveled extensively across the United States, visiting national and state parks where he enjoyed camping and fishing—passions he continued well into his later years. After retirement, he also dedicated himself to caring for his beloved cats, a reflection of his gentle and nurturing spirit.
Manuel shared over 57 years of loving marriage with his devoted wife, Ofelia Alanis Sloss. He is survived by his sons, James Michael Sloss (Ruth) and Brian Matthew Sloss (Heather); his beloved granddaughter, Mikeala Ann; and his siblings: Romeo Sloss (Teresa), Yolanda Sloss Salinas (Jose Carlos), Diana Sloss, Criselda Sloss Borjas (Paulo Antonio), and Margot Iris Sloss.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Soila L. Sloss and Manuel Sloss, Sr.; his brothers, Armando Sloss and David Sloss; and his sisters, Elia Sloss and Aida Sloss Bravo.
Manuel will be remembered for his kindness, his gift of storytelling, his deep sense of service, and the love he shared so freely with those around him. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Military honors will be performed by McAllen Post 8788 in recognition of Manuel’s service to his country and community in the ARMY.
