On May 12, 2024, the Dallas Cowboys lost their biggest fan when Refugio "Cuco" Quintana (age 78) passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family. Refugio was a man of many talents - a body man, a mechanic, a carpenter, a landscaper, and the list goes on. Above all, however, Refugio was a devoted father who did everything for his children. Until his last days, he proudly bragged to everyone that his greatest accomplishment in life was raising four wonderful and successful children: Marisol (Robert), Fabian (Leticia), Rolando and Monica.
Refugio was a humble man that took great pleasure in the little things in life like warm Shipley's donuts, cold Pepsis and huevos rancheros. That's not to say he did not occasionally enjoy some of the finer things like t-bone steaks (bone-in), Polo shirts, and designer colognes.
Although small in stature, Refugio's presence was larger than life. His little smile would light up any room and was usually accompanied by many "he's-so-cute" comments.
Perhaps Refugio's greatest attribute was his always-present desire to help those in need. Sometimes that meant pulling over to help a stranded driver. Other times, it meant cutting the neighbors' yard because they were unable to do so. If ever someone epitomized the phrase "not all heroes wear capes," it was Refugio.
Although Refugio is no longer with us physically, his children know that he is in Heaven and will be guiding them through life like he always did.
In addition to his children, Refugio is survived by Graciela Cortez, his wife of 38 years; four granddaughters Ashley (Diego), Clarissa, Karina and Claudia; one great grandson Bobby Ray; and numerous siblings, nephews and nieces.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Juana Maria Espejo for providing wonderful medical care to Refugio, and Ella Rodriguez for all that she did during Refugio's last months.
A viewing will be held at Funeraria Del Angel Palm Valley on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 from 5pm to 10pm with a rosary service at 7pm. Services will continue Thursday, May 16, 2024 with a catholic mass at St. Jude Catholic Church in Pharr at 10am.
