Funeral services will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary on Monday, July 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Wayne Scarborough and Rev. Olivia Poole officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens with friends invited to Auburn Heights Baptist Church following the service. The family will also receive friends at Striffler-Hamby on Sunday, July 6th from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m..

He is survived by Micki Thornhill, his wife of 18 years, children Russell Thornhill and Shellie Thornhill, Aaron (Tennille) Grossman, Matt (Monica) Grossman, Scott (Shelly) Grossman. Grandchildren; Josh Thornhill and Heather (Tony) Follett, Detrick and Evan Grossman, Trevor, Bailey and Zachary Grossman, Kory and Kooper Grossman. Great grandchildren; Jackson and Samuel Thornhill, Olivia Badour, his very special aunt, Estelle Thornhill, many family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Obie and Katie Thornhill and Kathleen Talley Thornhill, his wife of 33 years.

In his younger years, Ben enjoyed dancing, a good game of golf and always had the right joke at the right time. A quiet man, he was known for his honesty, integrity and reliability. Up until his dying day, he made sure his family was well taken care of. He served 21 years in the Air Force and retired as Russell County Administrator after 22 years.

Honorary pall bearers will be George Washington, Joe Edwards, Tom Long and Ellis Whitehead. Pall bearers will be Bruce Tengwall, Jeff Tengwall, Tom Tengwall, Jerry Johnson and Jacob Johnson.
