

1 SG Carl Council Copes, 78, U.S. Army ( RET) of Phenix City, Alabama, died Saturday February 19, 2011 in Columbus, Georgia. Funeral services with military honors will be 2:00pm Wednesday Frebruary 23rd in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 3770 Highway 431 N, Phenix City, AL. 36867, with the Reverend David Dollar officiating. Private iInterment will be in Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6pm until 8pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Copes was born May 28, 1932 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, son of the late Frederick Mount Copes and Wyouida Emery Copes. He retired from the United States Army after serving 2 tours in Korea and a tour in Vietnam. He later retired from civil service at Ft. Benning, Ga. Military awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s badge 3 awards), he Korean service medal ( 2 awards) the Vietnamese Campaign Medal , The Good Conduct Medal and numerous other unit citations and awards. He was a member of the St. James Freewill Baptist Church in Phenix City. Other than his parents Mr. Copes is preceded by 3 sisters and a brother.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Jean Copes of Phenix City, sons and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kathy Copes and David E. Copes, all of Phenix City, daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Kay and Joe Dennis of Cataula, GA., Traci Copes of Phenix City, Sondra Fay and Paul Bourff of Juniper, GA., Amanda Parker of Phenix City and Kelli Ann and Shawn Caughey of Phenix City, 13 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, nieces nephews and other relatives and friends, trusted companions, Glory, Lilly, Bernard , Daisy and Stripe.
