SSG Eugene C. Downing, Jr. died Sunday, September 18, 2016 at his home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. EDT Thursday, September 22, 2016 in Lakewood Hall at Striffler-Hamby, Phenix City, AL with Rev. Greg Hyche officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00PM until 8:00PM EDT at the funeral home.
Mr. Downing was born June 10, 1952 in Plymouth, New Hampshire; son of the late Eugene C. Downing, Sr. and Alice Jones Nierson. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Ladonia Baptist Church, the V.F.W., D.A.V. and Habitat for Humanity.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Margaret "Peggy" Downing; his sons, John E. Downing, Sr. and Joseph J. Downing; three grandchildren, John, Joshua and Justin Downing; mother, Alice Nierson; three brothers, eight sisters, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
