Born in Jackson, Mississippi on 3 April 1923, Dr. Miller was predeceased by his parents Joe T. and Lenora Miller, one sister, BobbiJean D'Accardo, his grandson B.J. Miller, and his wife of 56 years, Joyce Haskins, daughter of Fred Haskins, former golf teaching professional at Columbus Country Club.
Jim served in the army 22 years, played in the army band, and was also awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Korea. They settled in Columbus in 1961 when he retired as Major. Jim briefly worked in advertising, then enjoyed a successful career in life insurance sales with Prudential. Upon retiring from Prudential, he returned to college and earned two Masters and a PHD from Auburn University. He taught Early Childhood Education at Troy State University, Phenix City and was essential in developing the Special Education System for Russell County schools.
Dr. Miller attended Modesto High School in Modesto, California where he played clarinet in the band. He credits award-winning band director, Frank Mancini, with instilling in him a life-long love of music. JT played clarinet in the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the pit orchestra at the Springer Theater, and was a member of The Bob Barr Community Band.
He is survived by one son, James H. Miller, and two daughters, Judith A. Miller and Jeanne L. Miller Adkins. Two grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of funeral service, Dr. Miller wishes a donation be made to the Bob Barr Community Band.
