Johnny Walter "Jay" Hammett, 87 of Phenix City, Alabama died Friday September 27, 2013 at his home. Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Monday in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby, Phenix City, AL with Rev. Mike Reeves officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday (today) from 2:00pm until 4:00pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Hammett was born June 11, 1926 in Covington County, Alabama. He is the son of the late Marvin Walter and Laura Hudson Hammett. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Columbus, served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was co-owner of B & H Steel along with Bill Boyd for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary Evelyn Daniel Hammett of Phenix City, AL, Children, Myra Jerotha Boutwell and husband Ronnie, Judy Ann Sheppard, Linda Spidle and husband Ed, Johnny D. Hammett and wife Cindy all of Phenix City, AL, sisters Esta Odom of Opp, AL, Sybil Hall of Dozier, AL, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and special nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
