Phenix City, Alabama - Martha Porter Webster, 85, passed away Wednesday, December 28 with her family by her side.
Martha graduated Central High School in 1944 at the age of 16 and St. Patrick’s School in 1941. She began her career at Martin Theaters corporate office, moved onward to raising her children, then became known as “the World Book lady” in the 60s rising to the role of District Sales Manager after achieving numerous Top 10 US sales awards. In the 70s she became a real estate agent and in the 80s she became the owner of Five Points Thrift Shop in Phenix City. An avid gardener, she was awarded “Yard of the Month” several times through the years. Never one to sit still, she will be remembered well for her hard work, devotion to her elders and spirited personality. Martha was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses since 1945.
Martha married David Ellison Webster November 4, 1944. She is preceded in death by her husband and siblings (R.T. Porter, Myrtle Porter Davis, Myrtis Porter Averette, Mildred Porter Duane and Mittie Porter Sanders Purvis). She is also preceded in death by her parents Wilburn Porter and Jewel Newsome Porter and the aunts that raised her, Mozelle (her Yettie) Porter Schuster and Winnie Mae Porter.
She is survived by one sister, Mary Porter Dotson, her devoted daughters, Susan Tompkins (Barry), Karen Wright (Earl) and Beth Webster, six grandchildren (Michael Pattillo, Michele Pattillo Moshell (Turner), Jessica Wright Tillery (Drew), Kelsey Wright, Kimberly Wright, Ben Wright) and a great grandchild (Lily Turner Moshell).
The family will receive visitors at Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home in Phenix City on Friday, December 30 from 6:00-8:00pm. A graveside service will be held at Lakeview Memory Gardens in Phenix City on Saturday, December 31 at 11:00am.
