Our beloved Mother, Matred Jones Perdue, age 96 of Phenix City, Alabama passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2024, peacefully at her home surrounded by her 4 daughters by her bedside. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 15, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. EDT at the First United Methodist Church in Phenix City, Alabama, with Visitation for Family and Friends from 9:30 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. EDT at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens.
Matred was born April 26, 1927, in Pine Hill, Alabama, as the 6th child of the late R K Jones, a Methodist minister, and Leila Mae Tate Jones. Growing up, Matred loved living in a large family of 13 children. She enjoyed life and hearing the stories of all her siblings. Her earliest ambition was to marry and have children. Her proudest career accomplishment was finishing 4 years of college at the University of Montevallo with a B.S. degree and getting a job. She married J.C. Perdue, Jr. August 26, 1948, and was blessed with 4 girls and 69 years of marriage. Matred was actively involved in church activities at First United Methodist Church, teaching younger and older members in Sunday School classes for all her adult years. She showed kindness, appreciation, love and hospitality to everybody and went out of her way to be helpful. She was a mentor and a role model to so many people. She was also involved with Phenix City Civitans, and The Gideons Auxiliary and enjoyed reading, sewing, playing cards and games. Her proudest family moment was when she joined the church at the very young age of 7 years old, and the thing she would like people to remember most about her is that she loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all her heart.
Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Calvin Perdue, and siblings, Haniel, Jedidah, Aziel, Lael, Phoebe, Joel, David, Mary, Sarah Mae, and Ruth Edna.
Survivors include her four daughters, Deborah P. Holmes, Wendy P. Esco, Valerie P. Graham (Stanley), Rebecca P. McManus (Charles); grandchildren, Jared Clayton Esco, Ann Marie Alton, (Tim), John Charles McManus (Randi), Leslie H. Gilbert (Justin), Jeffrey L. Holmes (Rachael), and sisters, Lois Holt and Martha Hyles; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1600 Sandfort Rd., Phenix City, AL 36869, or to the Gideons International at Gideons.org.
