A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will take place at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary - Phenix City, Lakewood Hall, 3770 Highway 431 North, Phenix City, Alabama 36867, on September 24, 2026, at 2:00 pm EDT with Rev. Rodney Mitchell and Jenna Bryant officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Crawford Avant, Davis Avant, Jordan Avant, Daniel Bryant, Richard Hardy, Steve McGarr and John Revell.
Private Family Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens, 3800 Hwy 431 North, Phenix City, Alabama 36867.
William was the son of the late Thomas Othal Avant and Lillian Hazel Jones Avant. He was a 1965 graduate of Central High School and graduated from Auburn University in 1972, which is where he met his wife, Susan. He was retired from Blue Cross/Blue Shield with 35 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Phenix City for more than 30 years where he served as deacon and was a volunteer in many capacities. He also served in the National Guard.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Susan Cain Avant, his siblings, Mary Sylvester, Larry Avant, Linda Myers and Dale Avant.
Survivors include his children, William C. Avant (Leslie) of Phoenix, AZ, Andrew Avant of Phenix City, AL, Elizabeth Avant (Jake Pearce) of Charlotte, NC; also surviving are his siblings, Carolyn Blankenship of Florence, AL, Robert "Bob" Avant (Tamara) of Phenix City, AL, Wanda Wilcher of Pensacola, FL. and his beloved grandchildren, Davis Avant, Rachel Avant, Crawford Avant and numerous nieces and nephews.
William will be remembered by his family as an avid Auburn fan who enjoyed traveling to different football stadiums with his friends and later traveling with his children to to the football games. He took pride in spending time with his family and was a big supporter of their activities. They will remember him as having great joy in his humor and was very quick witted, but very humble and loved spending time with his family.
