She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She passed away March 25, 2018 and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Betty was the youngest of the seven children of Dennis P. Theiss and Rhoda Jane Miles Theiss. She was born in Ernest, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, September 29, 1928, where her father was a coal miner. Betty grew up in Strattanville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. She grew up with Ray McNaughton, who lived in the same small town, and they married August 29, 1947.
Ray studied to become a mortician and during their married years in Pennsylvania they lived in different places while he went to mortuary school, did his apprenticeship, and worked as a mortician. While they were in Pennsylvania they had three children, Barry, Carolyn (known as Candy), and Kathy.
The family moved to Sunnyslope, Maricopa County, Arizona, in 1961, and to Tempe, Maricopa County, in 1963. Betty resided in Tempe until her death.
Betty started working for General Electric in 1962 and stayed at the same plant when it was taken over by Honeywell in 1970. She retired from Honeywell in 1983 and remained active with the Honeywell Retirees Group for many years.
After retirement, Ray and Betty bought a 5th wheel trailer and travelled extensively across the United States. They often visited family in Pennsylvania and spent time in Mexico and Canada, including Lake Louise. In their travels they visited almost every state (missed Delaware).
After Ray died in 1990, Betty worked summers in stores at Yellowstone National Park from 1993 through 2001. She also travelled with her family, especially Candy.
Betty was an avid reader and did crossword puzzles every day. She joined Tempe First United Methodist Church in 1963 along with her husband Ray and continued as a member until her death. She loved attending exercise classes at the Pyle Adult Center in Tempe and having extra outings and coffee gatherings with her exercise friends. Her greatest joy was family get-togethers, sharing family news and stories.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers and four sisters, and her husband, Ray.
Betty is survived by son Barry (Janet Keating) McNaughton and daughters Carolyn (Candy) McNaughton and Kathy McNaughton (Larry Rhoda), grandchildren Adam (Kristen Schrenk) and Allison McNaughton, Jamie, Kristopher (Shannon Cline), and Jeff Foreman, and great grandchildren Mekenzie Rogers, and Boden and Achilles Foreman.
Services will be held at East Resthaven/Carr-Tenney Mortuary in Phoenix, Arizona on Monday, April 2, 2018 at 1:00 p.m., following a visitation at 11:00a.m.
