I always had an affectionate smile that would light up any room and gained the nickname Hondew as a child. I had a natural liking for extreme cleaning, cooking and doing hair. As a teenager I moved to Eudora, Arkansas with my mother and stepfather Rehoboth Grant and siblings Lymon Poole, Raymond Farley, Robert Wells Sr., Mary Wells and Lamar Grant.
It was in Eudora, Arkansas where I met my life long partner Arthur Edward Hendrix and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. In our union we birth four beautiful daughters Bernice, Louise, Asalee and Dorothy Lee.
I was a God-fearing woman who gave my life to Christ at an early age and served him till my passing. God blessed me with a strong, independent, caring and personable spirit. It was my loving and caring spirit that impacted everyone in my presence over the years.
I was preceded in death by my parents Richard Wells, Mary Grant, Stepfather Rehoboth Grant, lifelong partner Arthur Edward Hendrix, sister Maryann Wells-Gilbert, brother’s Lymon Poole, Raymond Farley and Robert Wells Sr. and granddaughter Jeneece Hutchinson.
I leave to cherish in my loving memories my daughter’s Bernice Hutchinson, Louise Hendrix-Brabham, Asalee Jackson and Dorothy Lee Wells-Rivera all of Phoenix Arizona, brother Lamar Grant of Eudora Arkansas, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.
Pray for my family I know many aren’t at peace, I Bulah Wells the last female matriarch of my family won the fight against time and gained my wings last night.
Over the last couple of days, I journeyed back through the memories of my life and oh! what a time I’ve had.
These old hands have worked hard all my life, in plenty of fields, prepared meals, nurtured babies and even spanked plenty of backsides. Yes! Yes! they knew Bulah didn’t take no mess.
These hands were gifted, yes! they performed a mean silk press. “Hold ya ear” that granddaughter Keisha mimics it best.
Each night I traveled to the homes of my 4 daughters providing my final source of comfort as I knew my days on this earth were coming to an end.
Lord watch over my family, especially my last living brother Lamar. My voice was restricted during our last duo call, I heard him say my face reminded him of mama, my heart melted knowing I was leaving my baby brother behind for the last time.
Last night the gates of Heaven opened, the trumpets sound and the angels brought forth my mother who placed my wings and welcomed me home. Don’t cry for me, but rejoice in knowing this soldier of the Lord Hondew as they called me has gone home to be the Lord.
To my daughters, my babies I loved you dearly and if I could I would have extended the hands of time so that our memories would last a little bit longer, but please understand mama was tired and rest was needed. Kiss all my grandbabies and until we meet again, I Love you all and make sure my baby brother is in good hands.
