He was born on August 19, 1931, in Bryant Oklahoma, to the late Ben and Minnie (Wirth) May. In 1950, Carl moved to Phoenix and began his career with The Arizona Refinery. After a four-year leave to serve his country in the US Air Force, Carl returned to The Arizona Refinery. Following his return from the US Air Force, Carl was instrumental in the design and patent of rubberized asphalt for the refinery. After a 36 year career with The Arizona Refinery, Carl retired and founded May Road Equipment where he designed, manufactured, and sold asphalt equipment to companies throughout the United States, Europe and South Africa.
In his younger years, Carl enjoyed racing jalopies at Manzanita Speedway. Later in life Carl enjoyed metal working and traveling in his motor home with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Wanda L (Beasley); his daughter Cheryl (Rob) Stephan, daughter-in-law Lisa (Boney) May; grandchildren Lauren Stephan, Kristin Stephan and Matthew May.
He is preceded in death by his son Gary Lynn May.
A Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 22, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Resthaven / Carr-Tenney Mortuary, 4310 E. Southern Avenue in Phoenix.
