

Fred entered the gates of Heaven July 2, 2010. He was a loving husband; father, brother, uncle and friend to all who knew him. He was born April 18, 1929 in Prescott, Arizona to Fritz and Bertha Thonen who preceded him in death. His family developed and managed the Broadway Swimming Pool and Dance Hall at 19th Avenue and Broadway for many years. Fred attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Phoenix Union and Phoenix Tech high schools and continued his education in Chicago at the Coin Electrical School. Fred joined the Air Force in 1951 and was stationed at Ellis Air Force Base in Nevada. Following his discharge from the service, he worked for the Goodyear Plant, Merritt Electric, Arthur Electric and the Palo Verde Power Plant. Fred is survived by his wife, Roxie, and his sisters Betty Hollowell of Phoenix. and Dorothy (Dotty) Moses of Tucson. His children are Bob Thonen (Carol) of Florence, AZ; Kathy Howland (John) of North Bend, WA; Paul Smith (Marlo) of Glendale,AZ and Lisa Smith Canady of Goodyear, Arizona. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Joy and Ryan Howland; Justin and Jared Smith, Meghan Zimmerman, Macey Benner, Robbie Thonen, Jason and Daniel Kay. Fred's memorial service will be July 17th at the West Side Church of God, 7925 West Bethany Home Road at 10 am; visitation with the family at 9:30 am. Fred's family is asking that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his name to Hospice of the Valley and the Christian Care Nursing Center at 11812 N. 19th Avenue.
