When we are children sometimes we think our teachers live at school and we are surprised to see them elsewhere.  Even in middle and high school we don't always think of teachers having a life outside of school.   Any teacher who has heard the voice of a child screaming across the mall or down the aisle at the grocery store knows exactly what I'm talking about and have experienced.

One day I was surprised to see Hayden Morrison on the stage at my church and announced as our new Minister of Music.  He was a man of faith and outstanding musical talent.  He encouraged me to sing and learn music at David Douglas but then also showed me how I could use my gift to minister to others at the church.  He inspired me, and I have had a lifetime of using the gift Mr. Morrison nurtured within me.  I've always thankful for his life and influence.

Hayden and I were "cello-mates" through High School at David Douglas in Portland, Oregon.  He was a year ahead of me and I looked up to him because he was such an accomplished musician. When he graduated in '57 I dropped orchestra for my senior year in '58 because I thought I could not play the cello correctly without Hayden by my side. 
I am so sadden to learn of my friend's passing. I had hope to renew our friendship and had accidentally found the notice of his death. I will forever regret not letting him know how much I valued our relationship and not telling him so before the "tomorrow" came and it was to late. The following is a poem i wrote about tomorrow and the passing of a loved one.
                                      IF
If Tomorrow Never Comes, as it has for you and Hayden, may the memories that were built on a thousand yesterdays, remain to lighten your way. 
For If Tomorrow Never Comes you had him for some years and a day, it is now his turn to seek that final resting place, the one he earned so long ago and now has found to stay.   
Yes, If Tomorrow Never Comes, you have said the good-byes and given your hugs so many times, and have said, just in case Tomorrow Never Comes, I love you in so many ways.
 
Tomorrow always comes, in so many ways.
