Jerry went to be with JESUS on October 18, 2025. When Jerry left this world, he entered the gates of Heaven. We believe that Jerry heard the following words from CHRIST: “Well done good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and Share in your master’s happiness!” (Matthew 25:23).
Jerry married the love of his life, Judy Hughes (Christy) on September 7, 1962. Jerry was a native of Iowa and resided in Bettendorf, Iowa for most of his life until moving to Maricopa, Arizona 14 years ago. Jerry was born on June 25, 1941 in Davenport, Iowa to Edward Hughes Senior and Mildred Dorothy (Malik). He was the second born of 7 brothers.
Jerry will be remembered as a kind and sacrificially generous father, grandfather and great grandfather to his children and children’s children. Jerry is survived by his wife, Judy Hughes (Christy), daughter Christy Potter (Mark) and sons Timothy Hughes (Andi), Matthew Hughes (Jennifer) and (8) grandchildren
and (6) great grandchildren. Jerry is survived by 3 of his 6 brothers, Roger Hughes (Marilyn Deceased), Stephen Hughes (Phyllis) and Jeffrey Hughes (Micky). Deceased Edward Junior (Sandy Deceased); Deceased Dale (Phyllis living); Deceased Randy.
Jerry came of age as an adventurous boy. Jerry and his friends would dive dangerously into Devil’s Glen creek, scraping their noses on the bottom before they came up for air. He also explored many caves with his friends. He attended Bettendorf High School. While in high school he had two jobs. Jerry was a pin setter at a bowling alley (before it was automated) and a gas station attendant – that pumped gas for customers.

Jerry enlisted in the United States Army and served for 3 years. He was stationed in Germany. He also served 4 years in the Army reserves. In September of 2023, Jerry was selected to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He was so blessed for this opportunity to go with others who served.
After leaving the Army Jerry worked at Alcoa as an overhead crane operator. Jerry left Alcoa and entered the machinist apprenticeship program at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois. He later
became an Industrial Specialist at the Rock Island Arsenal and was responsible for logistical support for all branches of the military. During his tenure, Jerry worked closely with Colonel Oliver North (during the Reagan Administration) and traveled to the Pentagon several times. Jerry worked on a high priority project that resulted in saving the U.S. government millions of dollars. Overall, Jerry’s job was very fulfilling but extremely stressful. He retired after 29 years as a civil servant in 1994.
Jerry gave his life to JESUS when he was 26 years old. If you were fortunate enough to eavesdrop when Jerry prayed a blessing, you could get a glimpse into Jerry’s heart, as a man that is in total awe of his GOD. After giving his life to JESUS, Jerry developed and maintained a bus route to pick up children for church. He taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School (VBS) and worked with teen groups. During one VBS, Jerry dressed up where one side of his outfit was Satan and the other side was normal to illustrate spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm (Ephesians 6:12). He gave Wednesday night devotionals. Jerry served on 4 work and witness teams in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Wounded Knee, North
Dakota and Phoenix, Arizona. Since moving to Maricopa, Jerry attended Calvary Chapel.
Jerry got his flying license and enjoyed flying the beautiful sky’s. He felt like he was touching Heaven when he flew. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle. Jerry enjoyed traveling much of the world, with Israel being his favorite. He also loved wood working. Jerry became quite the artist in using a scroll saw to create beautiful objects for family and friends.
Jerry loved his neighbors and they saw a man of CHRIST. Jerry loves JESUS with all his heart. Jerry would invite you to accept JESUS as your Savior.
