March 16, 1953 – May 20, 2026
Helen Serpa Gonzales passed away on May 20, 2026, at the age of 73.
Helen loved people. She could make friends almost anywhere and had a special way of making people feel welcome. Family and friendships were at the center of her life, and she genuinely enjoyed spending time with the people she cared about. She remembered birthdays, checked in on friends and family, and took an interest in what was happening in their lives.
Helen was a devoted daughter, mother, sister, friend, and "Nina" to many. Family members and friends often turned to her for support, advice, or simply a listening ear. She cared deeply about the people in her life and had a way of making others feel seen.
Helen had a special place in her heart for animals and rarely went very long without a dog or cat by her side. Animals were a constant part of her life, and caring for them brought her great joy. Over the years, more than a few strays found their way into her home, and family, friends, and neighbors knew she was always willing to help an animal in need. As the years passed, her pets became treasured companions who brought comfort, company, and happiness to her life.
Helen spent 36 years with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, a career she was incredibly proud of. She approached her work with dedication and professionalism and earned the respect of colleagues throughout her career. The Sheriff's Office was an important part of her life, and she remained proud of her years of service long after her retirement.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Gonzales, and her siblings Mary, Albert, and Michael.
She is survived by her son, Sam Leyvas; her siblings Anna, Dora, Dorina, Pasqual Jr., Esperanza, Martin, and Mary Lou; and a large extended family who will miss her dearly.
Helen will be remembered for the way she made people feel welcome, the kindness she showed to others, and the love she gave so freely to the people in her life. The family finds comfort in knowing that Helen's kindness, love, and generous spirit will live on in the many lives she touched.
Those wishing to honor Helen's memory are invited to keep her and her family in their prayers. Flowers are welcome, and donations may be made to the Arizona Animal Welfare League. Any of these would be a fitting tribute to a woman who found joy in beautiful things and had a special place in her heart for animals.
