This week, as we said goodbye to my mother Petra Mendoza, it hit me how incredibly lucky I have been to have my lovely mother with me for 56 years. Not only did I have that privileged to have her as my mother, I believed that our relationship grew stronger as I was able to care for her for the past 9 years. She had become my identity day in and day out. I’m so blessed to have shared that time.
Mom was born January 18, 1936 in Shaffer, Texas with her sisters Rose Heban, & my beloved Tia Irene Lechuga, Tio Baldomero Navarrette. She is survived to her children son Delores Mendoza, son-in-law Charlie Stier and daughter’s Connie Mendoza Stier, Mercy Jaquez, and our beloved brother Joe Mendoza who we lost at young age. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren and had the opportunity to have 28 great grandchildren. She passed at the age of 82 on 10/08/2018.
She was fatalistic, ambitious & hard worker, thrived, though, in her own way—always keeping busy, never feeling sorry for herself, and always excited to go to the casino or dancing with her sister/friend Maggie. She defiantly loved her some Ramon Ayala, Little Joe and of course Vicente Fernandez.
My memories of her will never be forgotten, right up until she became less able to get around, she was always eager to help out around the house, no matter what, she disliked a mess. Even if it would make me upset to see her cleaning, however it was what she liked to do.
Mom was a diamondbacks fan for sure, I can still hear her slippers sliding through the hallway just to let us know the score or who won the game. Or when she would be peaking her little head around the corner to see if I was home from work. One thing I will miss is her playful jokes with my husband Charlie; they had unique love for each other which also grew in to a strong relationship.
