Lovingly known as Grandpère or Nonc Al to both friends and family, he was so proud of the life he created with his wife, Shirley. He was a pillar of strength and hope to others, often sharing lively and detailed stories of encouragement and gratitude. A man of great charismatic charm, everyone loved to be around Grandpère - his spirit was infectious and his love for others was radiant.
Born and raised “Down the Bay,” Grandpère learned what hard work entailed from an early age. During his father’s lengthy illness, he assisted in assuming the role of caretaker and provider for his family. A life-long lover of the Spillway, Grandpère enjoyed crawfishing with his brothers and it meant the world to him that he could provide his family with the fruits of his labor even into his later years. His strong work ethic produced 43 years of service devoted to J. Ray McDermott. There, he made many lifelong friends who looked up to Grandpère with great pride and admiration.
A man who was faithful to his church, Grandpère rarely missed weekend mass and contributed as an usher. As a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph the Worker Church, he served with great dignity and honor.
Grandpère adored music. He loved listening to and sharing his passion for music as well as playing the guitar, whether it was for his family, his friends, fair-goers, or residents at the local nursing homes. After retirement, Grandpère got to work on recording his own CD and even often joined in as a guest on local radio broadcasts. Aside from the fun he had while playing music, the biggest treasure for him was watching those around him smile. When others were happy, it made Grandpère happy.
Grandpère’s family brought him tremendous joy and great pride. A true family-man, he cherished being a dad, and he lit up when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were around. A perfect weekend for Grandpère featured him getting up early in the morning, going catch some crawfish then hosting a crawfish boil for his family to enjoy. He put forth all that hard work because he knew it brought everyone together, and when everyone was together, Grandpère’s mission was complete.
Above all, Grandpère missed his beloved wife and adoring companion, Shirley, more and more with each passing day. Grandmère and Grandpère were married for 61 beautiful years and were hardly ever apart. They experienced the ups and downs together and truly lived life devoted to one another. They were a constant stream of love and support for each other and for others, and their spirit will be missed but felt by all who loved them.
Grandpère adored Grandmère with all his heart and longed for the day where they could be together again. On Friday, Heaven was filled with the sound of music so Grandmère and Grandpère could dance together once more.
Grandpère leaves behind to cherish his memory, his children, Alisa Landry Blanchard and husband Don Blanchard, Jr. of Napoleonville; his son, Alvin "JR" Landry, Jr. and wife Teresa Maurin Landry of Gonzales; grandchildren, Jennifer Blanchard Aucoin and husband Jonathan Aucoin of Donaldsonville; Donny Blanchard, III and girlfriend Alison Spengler of Baton Rouge; and Jessica and Grace Landry of Gonzales. Grandpère is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Jack and Mary Elizabeth Aucoin. He leaves behind his brother, Johnny Landry and wife Marlene Landry; sisters in law, Theresa Landry, Telezia Landry, Veronica Landry, and Dora Landry; brother in law, Norbert Templet and wife Brenda Templet; sister in law, Margaret Ackman and husband Daniel Ackman as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Grandpère was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Templet Landry; infant son, John Paul Landry; parents, Nary and Theresa Hebert Landry; his seven brothers, Ulysse Landry, Albert Landry, Nolton Landry, Leonard Landry, Willie Landry, and Dalton Landry; his two sisters, Vivian Leray and Jeannie Landry; father and mother in law, Loveless and Anita Rivere Templet.
The family would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Beverly Mabile, Jane Aucoin, Paul Rivere, and Julius Mabile for their unwavering support, care, and friendship over the years.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to the visitation at Ourso Funeral Home in Pierre Part on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM. A mass of Christian burial will begin at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church with interment in the church mausoleum following mass.
Grandpère, remember always, we love you more.
