HOURIGAN, FATHER MICHAEL JOSEPH, 71, of Lighthouse Point, went to be with his Savior April 30, 2012 after a brief period of failing health. He was born March 23, 1941 in The Orchards, County Limerick, Ireland to the late James and Mona (nee Lane) Hourigan. He studied for the priesthood in his native land and was ordained June 5, 1966 in Kilkenny. A few months later, he began his ministry in the Archdiocese of Miami serving as associate pastor at St. Rose of Lima Parish, Miami Shores, St. Gregory Parish, Plantation and St. Timothy Parish, Miami. Fr. Michael was the longtime pastor of St. Bernard Parish in Sunrise being formally installed in June 1978 and continued his ministry there until October 2010. He was then appointed pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Lighthouse Point. In addition to his parish work, he also served as moderator of the North Broward Deanery of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women since 1985, as a member of the Archdiocese's Presbyteral Council since 2001, as Dean of the Northwest Broward Deanery and as a member of the First Achdiocesan Synod. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Hourigan, sisters, Anne Hartigan, Katherine O'Dwyer, and Judy Hourigan. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving brother, Paddy (Anne) Hourigan, sisters, Mary (James) O'Brien, Monica Hourigan, Dolores (Sean) Hogan, sister-in-law, Nora Hourigan, brother-in-law, Dennis Hartigan, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 3, 2012, 6:00pm - 10:00am Friday, May 4, 2012 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2700 NE 36th Street, Lighthouse Point where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, 10:00am by Archbishop Thomas Wenski. Interment will immediately follow at Our Lady, Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, North Lauderdale.
