David was born in Port Arthur, Texas on December 31, 1948 to parents Era Claunch Laing and Monroe Laing. David graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1967 and went to work with his brother and father at Texaco Refinery. The country was actively involved in the Vietnam War during this time and fearing the possibility of being drafted into the Army, David enlisted in the Navy. He received his draft papers one week later.
David served in the Navy as a Radioman on the USS Horne. His journeys with the Navy led him to the Philippines, where he met the love of his life, Delia Amor. They were married on September 27, 1969. Their eldest daughter, Joyce, was born during their time in the Philippines. After serving 4 years, David left the Navy and brought his family back to Port Arthur, Texas. Shortly after returning back to Texas, the family was blessed with two more daughters, Christina and Nida. David returned back to his position with Texaco Refinery, where he worked for 37 years and retired in 2005.
David was a beloved husband, father, PawPaw, Great-PawPaw, uncle, and friend. He never met a stranger and would hold a conversation with anyone that crossed his path, particularly those that happened to ride with him in an elevator. He loved fishing and sports and was an avid fan of the Houston Astros, Houston Texans, and the Dallas Cowboys. He was a gentle soul and a doting, caring father to his Laing Girls. His ardent love and devotion were to his wife of 56 years, Delia. David was a good and kind man with an infectious smile and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
