Yes, I remember Tony fairly well, from the Cartoonist and Illustrators School later renamed the School of Visual Arts although I came to know him better from the 
Berndt Toast meetings where he dressed a little less conservatively....in school he appeared the typical art director...shirt, tie, jacket...but still a good guy and a damn fine artist. Who else could draw two or three hundred little figures in a full color illustration and remain sane? I miss you Tony.

It was such an honor to have met Tony through my connection with the Berndt Toast Gang. Tony will always have a special place in our hearts. 
One year,  at the Bill Kresse Halloween Cartoon luncheon, Tony “won” my cartoon! I’m so grateful to have snapped a photo with him that day. 
My deepest condolences to the family. 

Really, when I first met Tony at one of the Berndt Toast Gang lunches, I was surprised. I was coming to the lunches regularly for a couple of months before I even knew Tony was a Berndt Toast Gang member!  This was back in the day of Bill Seay, Tom Gill, Al Scaduto, Bill Kresse, Emilio Squeglio and others. Tony would appear maybe once a quarter. He didn't come all the time, and when he was there, he would smile and come up and shake my hand, ask how I was. He was a gentleman. What I didn't know is that while we were lunching, Tony was at his board, working. While we were eating lunch and complaining about finding freelance work, he HAD it! Ha ha ha. He may be the most prolific cartoonist I have ever known. I see his books -- his kids books, his how to draw books, etc. -- all the time. There's something like a thousand of them. And that's not counting the comics and magazine work. He was a quiet guy on the outside, but a volcano of inky production underneath. A true pro. He's an example to us all. His cartoon legacy lives on.  My deep condolences to Elvira and the wonderful Tallaricos.

I and the Berndt Toast Gang will miss seeing Tony's smiling face. Such a wonderful man and a great career working in comics and children’s books. A consummate professional, Tony was always in demand. He was rightly proud to have illustrated the first comic book with an African-American hero “Lobo.” 

My mom worked for Pan American airlines and I had a coloring book that they gave out on the flights. It came up in conversation with Tony that he had done the illustrations. He graciously autographed the book for me and it will always be a special treasure.
