Leonard J. Henderson of Port Jefferson, NY, passed away on June 9, 2025, at the age of 101. Born on April 12, 1924, in Detroit, Michigan, Leonard lived a remarkable life full of love, service, and dedication to his family, faith, and country .
Beloved husband of 44 years to the late Maureen, Leonard was a devoted father to the late Maureen Piquette (Thomas), James Henderson, Geraldine Manginello (Russell), Sean Henderson, and Terese Murray (Russell). He was a cherished grandfather to Kyle Piquette (Casey), Lauren Henderson, Matthew Heyman, Brittney Henderson, Bailey Darrow, Jessica Manginello, and Ryan Darrow, and an adored great-grandfather to Jayden Henderson, Hunter Taddonio, Anthony Taddonio, Sawyer Piquette, and Sage Piquette.
Leonard’s greatest joy in life was his family. A true family man, he treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy is one of unwavering love, strength, and loyalty.
A proud WWII Merchant Marine, Leonard later served the people of New York City with distinction as a firefighter with NYFD Engine 68 and 299. He was known as one of the greatest firemen to serve in his company. Leonard also had a deep passion for fitness—he began bodybuilding at the age of 16 and remained active well into his later years. He was a boxing enthusiast and a talented musician who played both the trumpet and cornet. His love of jazz, especially the music of Wild Bill Davison, was a constant joy in his life.
Leonard’s love of country was as strong as his devotion to family. A dedicated Conservative, he believed deeply in the values and principles of America’s Founding Fathers. He remained politically engaged throughout his life, frequently writing letters to the Port Jefferson Record, Newsmax, and even the White House—continuing his correspondence until just six months before his passing.
Leonard will be remembered for his fierce dedication, his kind spirit, and the vibrant life he lived over more than a century.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation on Friday, June 20, 2025, from 2–4 PM and 7–9 PM at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 4839 Nesconset Highway, Port Jefferson Station, NY. Latin Requiem Mass will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 10:30 AM at St. Michael the Archangel RC Church, 900 Horseblock Road, Farmingville, NY. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Liberty Avenue, Port Jefferson, NY.
Leonard’s legacy of love, courage, and conviction will live on in all who knew and loved him.
