Harry was a man of faith, the best husband, Father, Grandfather,
Uncle, Friend, and one of the best joke tellers. He was one of the
most resilient people you could ever meet. Harry loved food,
cooking, Fly fishing, Tennis, St. Patricks Day, of course the Red
Sox, and Japanese Culture. Harry taught Masonry at PATHS
(Portland Arts and TechnologyHigh School) for over 30 years. He
also taught English to Japanese Middle School students many
summers as part of an exchange program with Shinagawa, Japan
and Portland Maine.Harry was grateful for his teacher/mentor Alan
Palais who never gave up on him when he was in High School and
introduced him to Tennis. Ultimately he was ranked second in the
state of Maine. Harry loved working at Camp Calumet in Freedom,
NH where he worked for nearly 20yrs with Don Johnson, Camp
Director. It became his home away from home where he developed
lasting friendships and enriched so many lives.
Harry walked to Boston from Portland, Maine with six troubled
youth who had no goals or direction. He told them his story that
anything was possible. He challenged them and they accepted.
They walked 110 miles and raised money for The Boston Pediatric
Trauma Hospital. In October 1991 he attended a Wilderness
Experience for Teachers. His journal entry “Reflection from a
Mountain Top” was published in Outbound Magazine .Harry was
also featured on “I’m On Air” a Maine Television Production
where they tell stories about extraordinary people. They
interviewed him and he was selected to tell his story about
Resilience.
Some of Harry’s proud accomplishments include:
First in his family to graduate from college
Teacher of The Year
Lt. Govenor of the Kiwanas Club
Cub Master Boy Scouts of America
A hole in one
Rock Steady Boxing
One can’t process what happens when a huge personality leaves
our world. The void left by their love, laughter, and sensibility is
overwhelming.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.aycockportstlucie.com for the Grant family.
