

John was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on November 22, 1956. He served in the Air Force as a Staff Sargent at Maxwell Air Force base in Alabama and Ellsworth Air Force base in South Dakota from 1978 -1983. He loved his country and was proud to serve this great nation.
John attended Knox Theological Seminary in the early 1990s. He loved studying and discussing the Bible, and enjoyed engaging in theological debate. John loved singing and it gave him great pleasure to use his voice to praise God. From 2011-2012, he served as the worship leader at St. Lucie Presbyterian Church. John’s passion and the love flowing through his words were moving.
John retired in 2008 and was blessed to be part of a close-knit community at Madison Vines in Fort Pierce for the later part of his life. On any given day, this is where you could find him conversing with friends or sitting outside marveling at God's creation.
John is survived by his wife, Stacey Ann Schaefer and son, Kristopher Allen Herst. John is also survived by two daughters, Jennifer Owen and Ashley Herst, two sons John Herst and William Herst, and seven grandchildren.
A quote John lived his life by is “All of us get broken in some way, but what really matters is how we get back up and put the pieces back together” – Anonymous. It mattered to John to love with his whole heart. John will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
