Larry Jackson Hanger was born on October 6, 1938 in Fort Madison, IA and passed peacefully in the home of his daughter in Port St. Lucie, FL on Thursday, June 16, 2022. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Frances Hearne, his father, Guy Tucker Hanger, and his granddaughter, Sylvia Alsager. He is survived by his wife of more than 59 years, Roberta Arnold Hanger, his sister, Mary Ellen Rings, his brother, Rick Hanger, his children, Sean Hanger (Leann), Gretchen Alsager (John), 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and others who called him Dad, Uncle Larry, or Gramps.
Larry attended Fort Madison High school graduating in 1956. He then attended Iowa Wesleyan University and later Western Illinois University. He was married to Roberta Arnold on February 23, 1963. They had many adventures together with their children and with friends and family. He retired from General Electric in West Burlington after more than 25 years of employment. After retiring he spent his time at home in Raritan, Illinois and with his daughter and her family in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Larry loved people. He welcomed all and loved fiercely. He loved life and fought hard to stay here after his accident in January of 2022. He loved his animals, the Chicago Bears, and spending time in his “man cave” with friends and family solving the world’s problems. He had a wicked sense of humor and a very clever wit. He loved to travel and to speak Spanish any chance he got. He was a kind-hearted soul who would give you the shirt off of his back if you were in need. He never judged and would lend a hand to lift you out of whatever mess you had gotten yourself into. He could grow tomatoes that would make “The Godfather” jealous and could make a wicked pot of chili. He was an amazing cook and could make a meal out of just about anything.
Larry’s passing has left a giant hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be sorely missed.
