

North Yarmouth, ME - Arthur “Art” M. Stevens, Jr., of North Yarmouth, Maine, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2018, following a lengthy illness. His loving family was at his side throughout his brief stay at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME.
He was born on November 30, 1939, the son of the late Arthur M. Stevens, Sr., and Blanch E. (MacDonald) Stevens of Eastport, Maine.
Art was a 1958 graduate of Shead Memorial High School, in Eastport, Maine. Upon graduation from high school, Art enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and continued his military career with a subsequent enlistment in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1975, he joined the Maine Air National Guard, Bangor, ME, and was selected as part of the initial cadre as an in-flight air refueling technician (aka boom operator), conducting worldwide air refueling missions. In 1997, he retired as a MSGT with over 30 years of military service.
While remaining deeply devoted to military service in the Guard, he simultaneously built a successful career in human services counseling. His early experiences as a counselor with the Rural Youth Corps, Maine Indian Education, AFL-CIO, and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Associates lead him to establish his own statewide practice, Stevens Training Employment and Placement Services (STEPS) in Yarmouth, Maine, as a vocational rehabilitation counselor and facilitator. Art always believed in the importance of education, "blossom where you’re planted and it’s never too late to complete a goal." At the age of 60, he proudly earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern New Hampshire University.
Art was an avid golfer, an enthusiastic cribbage player and enjoyed his weekly poker games with friends. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren on many occasions at family gatherings, sporting events, and times at the lake.
Art is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Denise Bremner Stevens of North Yarmouth, his sons Arthur M. Stevens, III, (wife Lisa) of East Waterboro; Kevin Stevens (wife Patricia) of Biddeford; Michael Stevens (wife Laura) of Cibolo,Texas and his daughter Shannon Stevens of Cape Elizabeth. He also leaves two sisters, Nadine Whalen (husband Tom) of Fitchburg, Massachusetts and Sonja Fongemie (husband Dan) of North Fort Myers, Florida, one brother Kevin Stevens (wife Elaine) of Whiting, and one sister-in-law, Judie Stevens (Harry) of Whiting. Art is also survived by twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Arthur was predeceased by brothers Harry Stevens, David Stevens and wife Dorothy, Richard Stevens and wife Kayona, sister Joanne Brotheim and husband Jerry, granddaughter Ashley Stevens and former spouse Carolyn Mahar.
At Arthur’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A celebration of Arthur’s life will be held at the Amvets Hall, 148 North Rd, Yarmouth, Maine, on Saturday June 9, 2018, 1:00 to 4:00pm. Military Honors will be rendered at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Arthur are encouraged to make a donation to Habitat for Humanity.
Art’s sense of humor, quick wit, caring heart and generous spirit will be missed.
