

She was born March 31, 1930 in Portland, Maine the first daughter of the late Joseph and Grace (Resnick) McVane. Bernice graduated from Portland High School.
She worked for W.T. Grants, Walgreen Drug Store and retired from Sears Roebuck after 27 years. She volunteered as a Cub Scout leader at Trinity Episcopal Church on Forest Ave. and with Project Feed.
For the past 20 years she was a resident of The Park Danforth where she participated in many activities and the life of the residence. Her craft and seamstress ability was superb. She sewed for the residents and did special projects for The Park Danforth. She volunteered for the annual Christmas Fair and the Commissary Store. She enjoyed playing bridge and beano, along with painting many oil based pictures.
She was predeceased by her husband Edward A Smith, her sister Elizabeth Newcomb and her brother Bernard McVane.
She is survived by her 3 sons and families, Dana A. Smith and wife Sally of Minot, ME, Richard E. Smith of North Windham, and Jeffrey C. Smith of Mt. Joy, PA and her Sister-in law, Marilyn McVane of Jacksonville, North Carolina. She had 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Bernice will be sorely missed by her family and best friend Irma E. Baker and many of her friends at The Park Danforth. She wished to express her thanks to the Mercy Hospital and the staff of the CCU unit for their special care given her.
Bernice’s family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Mercy Hospital who kept her comfortable thru the final stage of her life.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Wilde Memorial Chapel in Evergreen Cemetery, 672 Stevens Ave, Portland.
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery will follow.
