Carol Anne Baker

Ultimately, losing this battle after surgury last month. We find solace in the belief Carol, & son's Jaime, and Craige will find joy in reunion.

Carol was born in Portland in 1933. Her mother Anna Smith.

A descendent of Irish immigrants who settled in Portland in mid 1800s. Her father Carleton Baker has roots in Maine that go back to 1700s.

Carol loved researching family geneology. She was proud to be a descendent of Edward Doty who came over on the Mayflower.

Carol had an adventurous,& entrepreneurial spirit. Selling real estate in the 1960s. Eventually owning apartment buildings in Portland. 85 Park St., mostly occupied by Portland School of Art students. Going to collect rent. She sometimes ended up leaving with a painting instead.

Carol owned J.L Gabbianos a popular restaurant in Freeport in the 1970s.

She went back to school later in life. Attending U.S.M, then receiving B.F.A from Portland School of Art. Subsequently, Lesley College graduate school.

Ultimately, earning master's in Education from Cambridge College.

Carol joined the Peace Corp.Â

teaching primary school children english in Budaors Hungary.

To promote tourism she translated menus to english for restaurant owners in town.

She made friends with the gypsy women. Offering to teach them to speak english.

The peace Corp. offered a one way ticket anywhere in the world when discharged. She was off to Mexico. Carol lived in Guanijuato, Mexico for two years before ultimately, settling at home in Maine.

Carols family is sure she is on a new adventure. Leaving behind her siblings Barbara Cutting of Sebago, Bo & Judy Baker of So. Portland, Donny & Janice Baker of California. Her children Joseph of Portland, Leslie of New York, Rachel of Falmouth.

Predeceased are Jaime,& Craige Grandchildren Chelsea, Nick, Courtney, Elliot, Matthew,

Kayla, Alex, Michael, John, &Ben

Greatgrands Blake, Grace, Gus, & Joe.

A memorial service will be held on Monday October 25th at 11 a.m. To be held at the Wilde Memorial Chapel in Evergreen Cemetery in Portland.
