

He was born on April 26, 1910 in Hallowell, ME a son of the late Webster T. & Beatrice (Jones) Gatchell. He grew up in Hallowell, attending local area schools and graduating from Hallowell High School. He married Margaret Blake in 1937.
Charles worked in sales until joining the US Army. He was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1945. After returning home he went to work for Merrill’s Inc. Later he would purchase the store and ran it until 1975 when he sold it to the Portland based Loring, Short and Harmond and retired to Wells.
He was very active member of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, serving on the board for many years. Charles was also a member of the American Legion Post 6 in Hallowell.
Charles enjoyed the outdoors especially fishing and upland bird hunting.
He is survived by his daughter Karen, his son Charles Jr. and his grandson Sean.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service with military honors on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 12 p.m. at Hallowell Calvary Cemetery, Water Street Hallowell, ME
