Dan was born on June 9th, 1953 to Muriel & Albert McKenney in Bangor, Maine. His childhood years were mostly spent in the Portland area where he made many memories with his siblings and closest friends. In 1971 Dan met the love of his life and best friend, Janet Ayer, and they wed in October 1973 and remained together for 55 years, until the very end. A 1972 graduate of Deering High School, Dan went on to earn his degree in Psychology from the University of Southern Maine and then his Master's Degree in Political Science through the University of Maryland.
Dan and Janet raised two children, Jeff & Nikki, that they were incredibly proud of. In 1980, Dan joined the United States Air Force and quickly deployed with his family to Germany. They traveled Europe and shared unforgettable adventures together!! They returned to the United States in 1986 where he was stationed at Langley Air Force base in Virginia. They finally returned home to Maine in 1988 and settled in Augusta. Dan was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and worked to serve the community. In 1997, he followed one of his dreams, which was to own a neighborhood pizza shop like the one he had grown up working in, the Quality Shop, in Portland. Together he and Janet purchased and began to own and operate Warmings Market in Brunswick, ME. They were fully immersed into the Brunswick community that they adored for 28 years. Dan made many meaningful connections over the years with their community and many employees that he and Janet have been so proud of!
Dan is survived by his wife, Janet McKenney; son, Jeffrey McKenney, wife Alissa, and their children, Brynn, Aven and Jared of Freeport, Maine; His daughter, Nicole Matson, partner, Nathan Gordon and children, Reid, Dayna, Paige, Averi, and Aiden of Bowdoin, Maine; His siblings, sister Colleen, and brothers Albert Jr., David, Michael, John, Paul and Patrick McKenney. Also, many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends that he loved dearly.
Dan had many loves -- motorcycles, art, history, learning, reading and above all else, music. If you knew him, then you knew he was a self starter that could teach himself how to do anything. He loved to teach others too. In his retirement he jumped right into art classes, piano lessons, building engines, guitars, stock education etc. He found true joy rocking the keyboard with his music family and band members in Stagecoach Express -- a brotherhood that meant the world to him!
Daniel was a rare soul, a dreamer that was a doer -- a servant heart with devotion to God, his family and his community. He was a model father, husband, brother, son, and citizen. He led with an impeccable moral compass. Generous, humble, brilliant, steadfast...he had all of the attributes that make great men great. He did nothing for recognition but only for the greater good of all of the countless lives that he touched and bettered along his journey here on Earth. He was a private man with a true gift of meaningful impact. He was a fierce protector of his loved ones.
He did not tell us how to live, he showed us.
If you wish to honor Daniel's memory.... love your family, love your friends, live out your dreams, and take a look around to see who could use a helping hand.
"The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band
I am a living legacy to the leader of the band".
