He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Reader, with whom he shared a close bond, and his beloved uncle, James K. Harwood Jr.
Dan was dearly loved by his "Aunty" Helen Harwood, until her passing on June 2, 2026. He is survived by his cousins, James B. Harwood and Holli-Anne Lottie Harwood. He is also fondly remembered by Tim Williams, his wife Maria, and their daughters Sofya and Alexandra, as well as his adoptive parents, William and Margaret Moore, and his siblings, Mary Ellen Neff, Beth Breeding, and Will Moore.
Dan proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Fulton, a submarine tender. He went on to work as a pharmacy technician for Apria Healthcare and the Department of Veterans Affairs for more than 25 years. He loved and respected his fellow veterans and felt honored to serve them.
Dan developed many meaningful friendships during his years at the VA. He was especially close to his friends and coworkers, including Brittany Hawkins, Kristen Hanson, Kelly Harmon, Michael Proulx, Nick Jalbert, Rachel Tibbetts, and Julie Buzzell. Their friendships extended beyond the workplace, bringing plenty of laughter, conversations, and inside jokes. Among them was Dan's running joke about his "imaginary friend Gilbert," who was, in fact, a real IT employee.
He loved Marvel movies, animals, his truck, and his coworkers at the VA. James and Dan would get into the occasional food fight, usually started by James tossing a pea at Dan. Dan hated peas, which only made it funnier.
As Tim Williams shared, "Dan was a good man. We all miss him and are each fortunate to have had him in our lives."
Dan's loss had a profound impact on the Harwood family. To James, Dan was the brother he never had, something he wishes he had told him while he was still here.
He is dearly missed by all who knew him.
