David Shaw Chapman (Chappie to his friends), 65, of Scarborough, Maine, passed away unexpectedly on January 19, 2026. David graduated from South Portland High School, attended SMVTI receiving a degree in plant and soil technology. He then attended University of Maine Orono and obtained a bachelor’s degree in business.
David was predeceased by his parents Barbara (Shaw) and Roland Chapman and his great nephew David Butler III. He is survived by lifetime partner and soulmate Mary Nicolantonio, his beloved daughter Tara Gassett, and grandchildren Ashley, Jaylin, David, Addison, and Kaleb. Also surviving are his siblings Rolayne and Steve Ames, Rolayne’s son David Butler and daughter Jade Rogers; Kimble and Mary Jo Chapman their children Kyla Chapman, Honesty Cook, and Delight Comerford; and Scott Chapman and daughter Kristin Ricci. He will also be missed by Mary’s children Kati, Joey, and Justin; many great nieces and nephews.
David made a living with his business Southern Maine Contracting, real estate, urchin diving, elvering and clam digging. His excellent commitment to quality work earned him the respect and friendship of many colleagues.
David had boundless energy and never let one minute of his life be dull. His fun loving personality and laugh brought him great friends as he enjoyed camping, motorcycling, skiing, snowmobiling, boating, horseback riding, spending time with family and making a point to be in their lives.
A celebration of life will be held on April 12, 2026, 1 p.m. at the Portland Elks.
A private internment will be held in the Spring at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
