David Russell Tannenbaum passed peacefully away surrounded by his loving family on March 19, 2024 in Lewiston. He was born February 4,1955 in Akron, Ohio to Abe Tannenbaum and : Delores Yhost. Although he lived in many different places as a child, David always considered Philadelphia to be home. Despite a turbulent and challenging childhood, David grew to become a kindhearted and generous person.
As a young man, David enlisted in the United States Navy. For the rest of his life, his military service would be a defining mark and point of pride for him. He served on Navy submarines as a cook, and he enjoyed cooking and providing good food to his peers to help compensate for the challenging conditions under which they lived and worked. David served several years on the USS Simon Bolivar and also on the Andrew Jackson, Henry L. Stimson, and Archerfish submarines, and earned his Blue Nose certificate for crossing the Arctic Circle.
David retired from the Navy in 1990 and relocated to Lisbon, Maine, with his wife Marsha and young children Jesse and Dani. In these years, he undertook a few entrepreneurial ventures and at various times operated a card and comic store (Super T’s Cards & Comics) and a computer repair shop (Super T’s PCs). He was active in coaching his kids’ various sports, including soccer, baseball, and softball. They remember him as a good coach, who was tough but fair, and who always pushed them to improve. Dani credits her dad with influencing her to become a coach in adulthood. David also enjoyed camping and fishing with his family, and loved baseball and attending Red Sox games, although he remained a devoted Philadelphia sports fan, loyally rooting for the Phillies and Eagles.
Later in life, David met his second love Jayne Jordan and they married in 2008. He and Jayne shared many interests, including history, exploring genealogy, going to flea markets, participating in powwows, and watching old Westerns together. Jayne helped him to explore his own family background and heritage, and David made many new valued connections with family members thanks to her.
David loved with his whole heart and taught those around him charity, kindness, and generosity. He is survived by his loving wife, Jayne; son Jesse and partner Jessica; daughter Dani and partner Peter; grandsons Elijah and Isaac; former spouse Marsha; younger sister Caroline; beloved dog Trip and cat Zucchini; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His family invites you to join them at 2pm on April 19, 2024, at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery for a burial ceremony recognizing and honoring his Navy service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, David’s family asks that you honor his memory by performing an act of kindness and charity, like he would have done.
