He was a ninth generation "Brash & Salty Down East Mainer" born at home in Eastport, Maine. The son of Elmer E. Andrews and Lillian "Bernice" McDougall, he was raised in Calais leaving school early to join the United States Navy where he served in the Korean War on the U.S. Everglades AD-24. Following the war, he returned to Calais and married the love of his life, Terry Fox. They moved together to Southern Maine, eventually settling in South Portland where they have called home for the last 45 years.
He was employed as a Car Inspector at the Portland Terminal Railroad for three decades, retiring in 1987. After retirement, he continued his hobby of repairing bicycles for neighborhood kids from his Evans Street garage. He fixed thousands of bicycles for three generations of local families, always charging very little or nothing at all.
He was a member of the VFW Post 832, The Portland Eagles Club, The Moose Lodge and The American Legion.
He was predeceased by his parents, older brother Richard "Dickey" Andrews and infant grandson Rowen.
He leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Terry; sisters Nancy Loucks of Conesus, New York and Susan (Joe) Benedetto of Calais; sons Richard "Troy" (Bradley) Andrews of South Portland, Todd (Daniele) Andrews of Biddeford, and James Andrews of Corinna; daughter Sandra Maynard of Dover-Foxcroft; grandchildren Luke and Maggie of Westbrook and Reese of Antioch, TN; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
