Elwood was the oldest of three sons, born to Irene and Elwood Beal Sr. on November 27, 1951, in Lewiston, ME. During childhood he attended schools within the Lisbon School System until he graduated in 1970. He went on to meet the love of his life, Linda Beal. The two were wed in their den on April 7, 1987 and together they raised Linda’s three beautiful children.
Beginning in his teen years, Elwood became an avid car enthusiast. He raced dragsters at Oxford Plains Speedway, attended car shows with his brother Glenn and watched NASCAR races religiously. Aside from cars, he loved motorcycles, purchasing a few throughout his life that he would take on rides with Linda, Glenn and friends. Other trips included going to Grand Lake Stream, ME to visit family and somewhere warm for him and Linda’s anniversary, which always ended with a stop at Foxwoods. When he wasn’t enjoying life in the fast lane, he was participating in recreational sports like billiards and most recently, golf.
Family was very important to Elwood. He had 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren whom he loved spending time with. Not only was Buttons a family man, he was well-known throughout the Lisbon community. He was both a member and former Vice President of the Lisbon Falls Slovak Club, where he would socialize with friends and have a few drinks on Friday nights. Aside from having a social presence in the community, he held a professional one as well. Elwood was employed at the Lisbon Public Works for over 30 years, holding a number of positions from Foreman to Director, until he retired in late 2020. Retiring from Lisbon Public Works wasn’t the end of his work history, however. He went on to drive cars to and from car auctions every week. When he wasn’t working, he was enjoying time at home with his two chihuahuas, Rocky and Buddy or posting hysterical, relatable memes on Facebook.
Elwood was predeceased by his parents, Irene and Elwood Beal Sr. and his wife, Linda Beal. His memory will forever be cherished by his brothers, Glenn Beal and wife Gloria of Lisbon Falls and Shawn Beal of Sabattus; children, Jeffrey Beganny of Auburn, Bill Beganny and wife, Sabrina, of Litchfield, and Jennifer Beganny and lifelong companion, Jaime Getchell of Lisbon Falls, ME; grandchildren, Brooke Gosselin, Lauren Beganny, Kyra Sylvain, Amara Beganny, Brody Beganny, Aleeya Getchell, Corbin Beganny and Riley Morang; great-grandchildren, Delilah, Porter, Camryn and Emelin, as well as many nieces and nephews who loved him very much.
Elwood will always be remembered for his wit, sense of humor and unconditional love for his family and friends. He will forever be in our hearts and greatly missed.
