Harland B. Webber, Jr., 91, passed away peacefully at home on May 20, 2026. He was the eldest child of Sarah and Harland Webber and was raised on Great Chebeague Island, a place he cherished throughout his life. Known to many as “Chirp,” a nickname earned from his remarkable talent for whistling, Harland could often be heard filling the air with a tune and bringing smiles to those around him. The strong sense of community and connection he learned growing up on the island stayed with him throughout his life.
Harland shared more than 70 years of marriage with the love of his life, Mary E. Webber, who passed away in April 2026. Together they built a life centered on family, raising their four children Bryan Webber, Scott Webber, Lori Dimick, and Lisa Googins in Yarmouth, Maine.
Though his childhood was modest, Harland possessed a determination inherited from his mother that would shape the course of his life. He attended Maine Maritime Academy, graduating in 1955 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to enjoy a long and successful career in engineering, eventually owning his own company and continuing to work until his mid-eighties.
Harland possessed a lifelong curiosity and love of learning. He was especially fascinated by history and could often be found reading about historical events, sharing stories, or engaging others in thoughtful conversations about historical events and figures. He also took great pride in his family heritage, particularly the Irish roots passed down through his mother, Sarah.
Harland will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, determination, devotion to family, and, above all, his wonderful sense of humor. He had a gift for making people laugh and could light up any room with his charisma, quick wit, and seemingly endless supply of jokes.
He was the rock of the Webber family, a steady source of strength, wisdom, and support. Harland and Mary Ellen spent countless summers at their beloved cottage on Chebeague Island, where he enjoyed boating, golfing, dancing, and, most of all, gathering with family and friends. Whether it was a cookout while admiring the vibrant Chebeague sunsets, a walk to Deer Point, or a cocktail party with loved ones, Harland was happiest when surrounded by others. His door was always open, and he especially loved spending time rocking the babies and chuckling with young children in his family. His enthusiasm for life never faded. If Harland was in the room, laughter was never far behind.
Harland was blessed with a large and loving family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom knew him affectionately as “Bub.” They brought him immeasurable joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Harland was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary E. Webber; his parents, Sarah and Harland Webber; his brother, Charles Webber; his sister, Mary Gomez; his daughter, Lisa Googins; and his son-in-law, Charles Googins.
After a lifetime side by side, Harland was reunited with Mary Ellen, his beloved wife and best friend. The sound of Bub’s whistle may have faded, but the love, laughter, stories told and memories he created will echo through generations of family and friends for years to come.
A Celebration of Life honoring both Harland and Mary Ellen will be held on June 28, 2026, at Lemont Hall, 2 Pleasant Street, Brunswick, Maine, from noon to 3:00 p.m. All are welcome. Please bring a story to share as we gather to celebrate two lives well lived and deeply loved.
