Harold worked for Mackey Radio before the war on teletype and Morse code. During the Second World War he joined the Navy and was a radio operator on PBY’s “Flying Boats” on submarine patrols on the east coast and in Europe.
He met his wife Gloria at the Portland Diner on Congress Street and was married three weeks later in July of 1945 and remained married for 48 years until her passing. They raised four children Mark of East Waterboro, Bruce of Sanford, Stephen of Millinocket and Susan Atila of Houston, TX. He also leaves many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Gloria.
“Swede” as he was called, worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance as a top salesman and supervisor. He made his home in Waterboro for the past 50 years, loving Maine and all it had to offer from boating on Ossippe Lake where he had a home for a time, to the coast of Maine, to the streams and lakes of Rangley and Moosehead. He brought up his children to appreciate what God has given them in this beautiful state, to look at, fish and hunt.
He will be sadly missed by all especially Marguerite B. Higgins, his companion of the last 16 years. “Honey” as she was called sure made his life easier after his wife’s passing and was the major highlight of his life in latter years.
One of the last of the greatest generation, he will have a private memorial.
The family wishes to thank Beacon Hospice and Greenwood Center as well as Dr. Frank, Dr. McGuckin and staff for their care.
