Jane, aka “Herbie,” was born on August 22, 1923 in Bangor, Maine to Mabelle Swett Herbert and Edward I. Herbert, but spent most of her youth living in Cape Elizabeth, attending Cottage Farm School and Cape Elizabeth High School. Jane went on to graduate from Wellesley College in 1944, and was immediately recruited by IBM as a Systems Service representative. During her 4-year career with IBM, one of Jane’s many accomplishments was designing the first Maine turnpike toll booth ticket.
Jane met and married William Parker Kirk in 1948, and they moved to Saco to build their home and raise their three children. During her 30 years in Saco, and subsequent 30 years in Falmouth, Jane was very active in the community, volunteering and serving on boards. She also thoroughly enjoyed golf, bridge, the arts and the wonderful companionship of many lifelong friends.
Jane is survived by her daughter Lindsay Kirk, daughter Lise Kirk and son-in-law, David Wood, all of Falmouth, ME; by her son, Gig Kirk and daughter-in-law, Ann Kirk, and granddaughter Kristie Kirk of Marshfield, MA; and her two grandsons, Andy Kirk and Ryan Kirk of Sarasota, FL.
There will be no memorial service, but the immediate family will have a private ceremony on the Saco River when the spring bulbs are in bloom.
In lieu of flowers, Jane requested that donations be made to either the Falmouth Memorial Library, or to the Wellesley College Fund.
