Janet, known to many as Jan, was a kind, loving, outgoing and strong individual with a deep spiritual connection. Jan was preceded in death by her father Hazen Trueworthy, mother Beth Trueworthy, and father-in-law Edward Hamel.
She is survived by her spouse, Charles P Hamel, her son Seth (Karlyn) Williams of Caribou, Maine, her daughter Kristen (Ron) Hanson of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, her stepsons Scott (Wendy) Hamel of Brooks, Maine, Kevin Hamel of Bangor, Maine, David (Sherrie) Hamel of Dedham, Maine, her stepdaughter Michelle Parker of Logansport IN, her sisters Hazel (Wayne) Henderson of Sydney, Maine, Betsy (Don) Cannan of Monmouth, Maine, her granddaughters Erica Hanson (Jerry Gravel) of Philadelphia, PA, Delaney Williams (Bret Butler) of Caribou, Maine, and Emily Hanson of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, as well as many step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jan graduated from Lee Academy in 1963 and completed nursing school in Portland, Maine, in 1966. She was extremely proud of her nursing profession, starting in Caribou, Maine, where she held various RN and teaching positions. When her children were young, she worked 11pm-7am to be home with them and eventually moved to days when they were of school age. From 1977 to 1990, she served as the RN Charge Nurse and Supervisor at Caribou Nursing Home before becoming the first Residential Care Director at the then newly opened Maine Veterans Home until 1997. Jan also spent time with Visiting Nurses of Aroostook County and later as an RN Consultant for assisted living facilities until her retirement in 2006. Geriatrics was her love and she was a staunch patient and family advocate.
Her dedication to helping others extended beyond her career. Jan and her husband, Charles, embarked on a 15-day Mission Trip in 2016 under the Largo Anona Methodist Church, where she served as an RN, fulfilling her passion for helping those in need.
Jan’s relationship with God was essential to her, and she & Charles found solace in worshiping at Silver Spring Shores Presbyterian in Florida, First Congregational Church in Lincoln, Maine, and New Hope Church in Bangor Maine.
In her leisure time, Jan, fondly called "Sweetie" by “Charlie”, enjoyed many adventures in their 22 years together. They always had plans to look forward to, whether canoeing the Allagash river, preparing for a Viking cruise or readying the camper for a new location. When not traveling, she could be found quilting/sewing; we often laughed at the amount of "unfinished" projects she had going. She loved to read and was part of a book club (to which her daughter was a lucky recipient of the yearly book list), the nurses group, and enjoyed attending the annual summer RN class reunions. She loved to cook, share recipes, play games and entertain friends and family; she always had a "Theme" and loved planning. Jan and her daughter loved shopping together and most trips included "I'll buy it for you, if you buy it for me" purchases. Most recently she loved hearing about the wedding plans for both Erica and Delaney and always asked about her “skirt girl”, Emily… Jan adored her family. She loved Hummingbirds, Dragonflies, Lake Loons, Cardinals and Red Robins. Each spring, her son would send her a picture of the first Robin of the year, it was a special bond they shared. “Sweetie”, will be missed by many.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 2, 2024, at 3 pm at First Congregational Church, 19 School Street, Lincoln, Maine 04457. Contributions in Janet’s memory can be made to Maine Medical Center (MMC), Geriatric Care: Donate Now | MaineHealth
