John was born May 9, 1932, in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada.
John, known as "Red" at Brownville Junction High School, played basketball, and was recognized for achievements in Biology, Science, Music, Public Speaking and Mathematics, graduated as salutatorian in 1950. He was a 1954 Army ROTC graduate from the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. In 1955, he married Geraldine Gass; he served in the United States Army, stationed out in the West Texas town of El Paso, until moving to Maine with Geraldine in 1958.
John worked for Unionmutual (UNUM) for 29 years, and joined the Society of Actuaries, attaining an FSA (Fellow of the Society of Actuaries) designation before branching out in 1986 and starting his own reinsurance company, John Hewitt & Associates, and retiring in 1998. After Geraldine passed in 2012, John married his childhood sweetheart Muriel Russell in January 2013.
John loved the water and always lived within a stone’s throw, whether it was Cape Elizabeth, Marco Island, FL, or on Sebago Lake. He continued his twice per week tennis matches during his retirement, traveled the world, researched family trees, and was active in the Rotary in Maine and in Florida.
John dedicated all of his free time and his heart to his family and was rarely seen without a grandkid holding his hand. John ('B' to his grandkids) loved being close to his family, taking boat rides, traveling to games and recitals, and visiting relatives in northern Maine and Canada.
John is survived by his wife Muriel; his three children, daughter Kathy Williamson of Waltham, MA; son Jonathan and his wife Kate Hewitt of Cape Elizabeth; and daughter Holly Hewitt of Cape Elizabeth; nine grandchildren, Lucy, Forest, Anne, Sierra, Claire, Quinn, Sarah, Nicholas, Dylan; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins from Maine and New Brunswick.
John is predeceased by the mother of his children, Geraldine; by his parents, Colin Ernest and Florence Anning Hewitt; and two sisters, Audrey Griffin and Pauline Robinson.
