John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Barbara Holt; his daughter and son-in-law, Bethany and Neil Buitenhuys; and his granddaughters, Emma Ryan, Merritt Ryan and Arielle Buitenhuys. He was predeceased by his son, John “Jay” Holt.
John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he worked for Exxon Mobil for 40 years before retiring. While still working full time, John also raised beef cattle on the family farm in Huntington, Massachusetts where Barbara grew up. The farm held a special place in their lives and reflected John’s strong work ethic, determination, and dedication.
Above all, John cherished his family and the time they shared together. He also enjoyed traveling to Florida each winter to escape the cold Maine weather. There he loved the warm sun and long walks on the beach everyday.
John will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. In accordance with his wishes, a private ceremony will be held at a later date with family and close loved ones to celebrate and honor his life.
John’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Maine Veterans’ Home of Scarborough for the exceptional care he received over the past three years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to Compassus Hospice in appreciation of the compassionate care and support provided to John and his family.
